The benefits of Trauma-Based Therapy with Sex Positive Techniques after experiencing a Military Sexual Trauma

Sexual trauma can create a wave of of emotions experienced, such as fear that carries over a span of days, weeks, months, and years as some wonder “if anyone will believe me?”. Thoughts occur that may be outlined with guilt, shame, concern, embarrassment, and at times confusion. However, now those feelings are multiplied with anger and resentment because the person who hurt them was suppose to be a brother or sister who was meant to be a protector, support, and battle buddy for life.

Each branch of the military has it’s own set of core values, but side by side they are quite similar. Honor always stuck out to me as being worthy of the respect provided by those around them. These values were meant to be upheld by all. Now, not only have they been violated but these heinous actions were committed by a person they should have been able to trust implicitly.

Rape is highly underreported in the military, usually due to the victim feeling a lot of complex emotions combined with a fear of not being believed. Trauma based therapy with sex positive techniques may be highly effective in supporting a person to work through their trauma to prevent long term sexual dysfunction. Survivors can address symptoms of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, flashback and emotional numbness while also addressing how they feel in their body. Perhaps you notice every time you touch a part of your body you flinch as if it was someone else’s hand. Trauma therapy integrated with sex therapy can combine trusted modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), and others with sex therapy protocols to support the healing process. This helps to reset the narrative so that a person is able to redefine sex for themselves and their current or future partner or partners.

Through Trauma-Based Therapy with Sex Positive Techniques, effective coping mechanisms are collaboratively designed with your therapist. This process is as individualized as a finger print. It is important to find the best fit for your specific needs by speaking with a licensed mental health professional practiced in Sex Therapy about what you hope to achieve in attending counseling.
