Better Connection Starts Here!

Two hands linked. Middle finger of left hand has a happy face in black ink. Middle finger on right hand has a sad face in black ink.

Do you feel like no matter what you do in your relationship, it’s never correct?

Maybe you feel disconnected, or feel a loss of trust in your significant other. You may be feeling unappreciated for the things you do that never seem noticed, or simply ignored when you feel what you are sharing is important. Perhaps you’re feeling that your sex life has dwindled and you desire to increase intimacy with your partner, but you are unsure how to start the conversation.

Whatever it is that you’re experiencing, you’re beginning to notice the impact:

  • Feeling restricted in what should feel safe to share

  • Increased time spent arguing or avoiding so you don’t argue

  • Less intimacy

  • Lowered sex drive

  • Emotionally disconnected

  • Family conflict interfering with how you both connect

  • Conflicts turn into “who’s the bad guy” instead of seeing the others perspective

  • Negative interactions are standing out over positive ones

  • Feeling lately that you aren’t even friends

  • Fear that your partner is considering an emotional or physical affair

  • Parenting styles are just not on the same page

Resulting in a desire to sit alone for one more minute because you never know what will happen once you walk through that door

If you have answered “yes” to more than two things listed above then you would likely benefit from Couples Therapy or Marriage Counseling

Do We Have to be Married to Attend Couples Counseling?

No, you do not need to be married to attend couples counseling. Some couples attend prior to being married, premarital counseling, and other couples desire to be together without marriage in mind. Couples Counseling is meant to strengthen the relationship and improve skills within it.  All couples who are desiring to improve their relationship are welcomed regardless of the relationship status.

Couples Therapy combined with other integrated therapy modalities can help

Your marriage may feel disconnected, but with therapy you can reconnect. You can feel valued. You can increase your trust and commitment to each other.

Couples Therapy helps you do four things:

  • Learn to maximize your partners wellbeing in the relationship

  • Learn how to manage conflict

  • Build a shared sense of purpose

  • Increase your fondness and admiration towards each other, so you both feel your importance to one another

I’ll help you through this process, tailoring each step to your unique needs and circumstances. My approach to Couples Therapy comes from a place of never taking sides in the therapy process: I believe that neither you or your partner are the problem, but rather you just need to reconnect so your communication is clear again.

What are integrated therapy modalities?

I work with all couples, including those in monogamous relationships, polyamorous, and LGBTQAI+ relationships. Based on my training in therapy modalities, such as Gottman, Sex Therapy, Affair Recovery, and Emotion Focused Couples Therapy, I support the couples I see in their relationship goals. I find success when therapy is based in understanding of how cultural influences, religious influences, and even things we learned from our familial relationships about what relationships “should be”. This allows for therapy to flow naturally where its not a one model approach but rather a integrated model approach from proven therapeutic methods to fit your unique union.

Things naturally change in our relationships and sometimes its based on our changes individually that causes us to miss our partners emotional cues. To secure your emotional bond is building a understanding of how we change as a couples. Perhaps there was a move, bringing home a child, parenting differences, our partner started a new job, or a health concern. Many factors can influence how we connect with our partner, and after you have a clear picture of these patterns, you and your partner can begin to make change in your relationship. Couples Therapy is meant to identify these pain areas together, build mutual understanding, and effectively communicate. I work with couples to build their communication skills so both sides can create shared meaning in the life they desire together.

Things should not become worse to get better. Your relationship is important for both of you! If you are in need of intensive sessions that need more than the standard session time this can be offered on a case by case basis. Reaching out to start the conversation on what’s best for your relationship starts now!

Who Should Not Attend Couples Therapy?

Sometimes it may be best to work on yourself before working on the “we”. Those who attend individual therapy prior to couples therapy can change their relationship naturally based on the changes they make to their own behavior or emotional wellbeing. If you recognize that “it could be a me thing” then you can start on your own prior to inviting your partner to join the process. It also may help an individual to recognize if they may be requesting too much from the relationship. An example may be a lifestyle change in which both partners need to agree for the change to take place, but both partners don’t always agree. If your partner has already shared their point of view on the matter then it may be assistive for an individual to assess it’s importance, discuss compromises, and work to understand how to better articulate these points in future discussions so they feel heard in the conversation. Discussing this with a counselor in the therapy process can help you do that without causing a continued disagreement in your relationship.
